This process is also known as 'fleshing' something out. Until an idea is fleshed out it exists only in the imagination. After the fleshing out process the idea moves from the realm of imagination to the physical.

The name 'fleshing out', sounds a bit gruesome. It's actually quiet a gross concept. It sounds like the process of skin growing over bones, which is an accurate description of the process. Ideas that exist only in the imagination are not yet alive, they are like bones. Once they've been fleshed out they are alive, covered in living tissue, the flesh.

This 'fleshing' process also sounds like it requires work. Well it does, the word is a verb, and it requires action. In a culture that values the quick and easy steps and desperately desires to be complacent, the idea of creating something new seems too difficult, scary, and stupid! It is difficult and it is scary but it's certainly not stupid.

Every single company that currently exists exists only because they've endured this painful and tiresome process. Putting the flesh of reality onto the bones of there imagination is something that we all have to do. This is very encouraging to the rest of us. When I think of Microsoft, I used to think of the multi-national empire. Now, when I think of Microsoft, I see a little nerdy guy named Bill, in his garage. Stressed out of his mind because he's battling to turn his dreams, visions and ideas into reality. Instead of just seeing the Microsoft brand and the logo I see Bill and many others behind it, those that built it and shaped it. The blood and sweat which created something new out of nothing.

Childbirth is a difficult and painful process, which precedes life. The 'fleshing' out of a company is similar in its difficulty and pain.
Yet this too precedes life.

Online Advertising

Today we made a sale to someone who found us via Ananzi's directory of online stores. I was quite surprised, because we submitted the Bug Zapper site to Ananzi almost as an after-thought (listing in Ananzi is free, but you are not guaranteed of results). We were placing a lot more emphasis on our Google Adwords campaign, which so far has cost us around R150, and produced no sales! It just goes to show that it can be worth marketing in the "free" online avenues, if you have a bit of time and patience.

Hate Mail

We received this e-mail recently:

It has come to my attention that the 4 of you are promoting an insidious traditional weapon that, in terms of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE. SHAME ON YOU!

The action of this weapon as you describe it on the Bug Zapper website is insensitive to Fly lovers (and other bug lovers) the world over. 'zap off a wing or a leg or both' is horrible. Since when is mutilation acceptable. Using a tennis racket form to disguise the real and despicable intention of this device brings the glorious game of tennis into disrepute. Imagine the crowd using these weapons at the Australian Open in January or, perish the thought, at WIMBLEDON. The zapping sound would distract the players. The only acceptable use for the weapon is to give it to Wayne Ferreira to use as a tennis racket and maybe the "zapping sound" would distract his opponents long enough in order for him to win a game or two. Husbands are also at risk as their wives cotton on to the idea of using it to keep their husbands at bay.

Don't you guys THINK of the consequences? You have dealt us husbands a mortal blow. The step by step directions for use of the weapon is too shocking for words. You should have an age restriction on the site as children or other "sensitive surfers" could be traumatised by the graphic display of violence.

Current research into "fly saliva" has yielded promising results in that fly saliva could be used in sauces - tomato sauce, HP sauce, Worcestershire Sauce and others to prevent life threatening diseases such as malaria, TB and HIV/Aids. SO!!! Your using this phrase to intimidate and frighten unsuspecting buyers into purchasing this device is in breach of the Advertising Standards Authotities Code of Conduct - Section 234, Para 34b, subpara 16(i) and (iv) - of the revised revised version of 2003/12/13/a.

I have also reported you to the UN WHO DUNWAT Advisory Board for them to place you on the "War against Terror" list for the promotion, advertising and selling of a weapon of mass destruction. At this moment I'm far too emotional to think clearly anymore. But be warned. I have head hunted Nan Rice of Dolphin Action Group fame to head up a high powered team to "Ban the Bug Zapper" and to protect flies throughout our land. This organisation will be called FLY = Flies Love You. and we are not a fly by night body by an measure.

You will hear more from me.

FLY's RULE, OK!!!

Naming a company

Coming up with a company name can be a fun or very frustrating part of setting up a new business. Due to the nature of Extreme Business we had one shot at coming up with a good name, and fortunately "Bug Zapper" was approved by everyone, and the co.za domain was available - a huge relief!

Marketing expert Seth Godin has written some good thoughts from when they named their latest company, "Squidoo". Read about it here.

How to make friends, influence people and make truckloads of money with one easy Zap!

Sheesh! Talk about starting a revolution!

This Extreme Business could cynically be seen in hindsight as a self-centred piece of self promotion, but fear not faithful followers - this idea was, seriously, done for fun.

Since starting the whole process - stemming from a bored Friday afternoon conversation in the studio between Shane and Andrew - we have been on a bit of a rollercoaster ride. We have had so many folk contact us, congratulate us and send us inspiring messages. (We've even had a couple of sales.) So this has got me thinking: is South Africa ready for an e-commerce invasion? Remember, Jon and I hit the streets and got mostly negative responses from the 'man on the street' in an impromptu piece of market research. We asked folk if they would buy the Bug Zapper online, and most said 'no way, man!'

But, nevertheless, we have sold a couple of the little buggers (pun intended). And what's more - we are even getting a few repeat sales. And now - we are getting reports of whole offices wanting to order the Bug Zapper.

So, that got me thinking even more. What's next? What other ideas can I think of that I personally would like to see. And without further ado - here is a list of online products that I would eagerly type in my treasured details for...

Hawaiian Shirts
Homer Simpson Merchandise
Backlog of Creedence Clearwater Revival LP's
Anything to do with Puerto Rican music

I dunno - I got some strange taste in stuff, but hey, isn't that what the internet is all about?

Extreme Service

Some of you may know this by now, but the 'Bugzapper' business plan was at one stage looking pretty sick. And we were looking even sicker.

Setting up a business in three days is tough. It's even tougher when your profit margin looks as slim as the Cheetah's chance of winning the Currie Cup. There is nothing more depressing than thinking your hard work is going to result in very little.

We're happy now, we're not sick anymore. Our profit margins have made a slight turn towards the Blue Bulls side of the Currie Cup chances. How did this happen? It came in the form of three letters, ACT. ACT Logistics gave us a fantastic deal on the delivery of the Bugzapper. Drastically improving our profit margins, making our business worth while.

In short ACT Logistics made our business plan worth while for us to pursue. I think the people at ACT sleep well at night, knowing that their business made our business possible.

I think we all want to be able to say the same. That the work we do, allows for other people to do their work. The reality is, the effenciency and compentancy in which our company works has a major effect on the way other companies are able to do their work.

Finally!

Yesterday we made our first real Bug Zapper sale! It has been far more draining then any of us imagined.

We achieved our goal of creating something from nothing. We have a brand, a product, a supply chain, an e-commerce website, and the start of an online marketing effort. As of 7:42pm on day three we have made a few sales to people who knew about us and this project, but we have not achieved our goal of a sale to a complete stranger who found us through online advertising. We will write more about why we think we failed in that aspect, but the short version is that leaving your marketing effort to the last day (particularly if that's a Saturday) is not a good idea. Technically there are still 4 hours left of today, so it might still happen!

We are definitely going to continue with this blog, giving more details on what we learned about e-commerce, logistics, online marketing etc, so stay tuned if those topics interest you.

E-commerce Update

My main job was to get the credit card facility up and running. We have done this before for other clients, but we didn't know if it was possible to do it in two working days (Thursday and Friday)!

The company we chose was Virtual Card Services (www.vcs.co.za). They act as an intimediary between the credit card companies and ourselves. The e-commerce process is:
1) The client visits our website and adds something to their shopping cart. They fill in their personal details, and then click on a link which says "Proceed to secure payment page".
2) They are taken to a secure page on VCS where they fill in their credit card details.
3) They are sent back to our website where we tell them that their package is on the way.

VCS then hold on to the money for 14 days before transferring it to our account. This is a security precaution in case we are ripping people off, and it gives VCS a chance to return the money to the customer. It does mean that VCS can get us up and running within a few hours, because there is no real risk from their side.

VCS charges a 6% fee per transaction, with a minimum of R150 a month. E-commerce options in South Africa are limited, but so far we have been happy dealing with this Johannesburg based company.

Extreme Tools

The following was used to make this new business venture possible:

Software:

Dreamweaver MX 2004

Freehand MX 2004

Fireworks MX 2004

jEDIT

Leech FTP

Apache

MySQL

PHP

Photoshop

Service providers:

Hetzner

Virtual Card Services

ACT Logistics

Idea Farm Visitor

Simon from Idea Farm (www.ideafarm.co.za) has just stopped by. Responding to the criticisms might give a better idea of what we're doing, so here is something I wrote on the TomorrowToday website (http://www.tmtd.biz/2005/10/05/extreme-business/#comments)

===========================================

We first had the idea for this project 2 weeks ago and we didn't want to lose momemtum, so it has all been put together very quickly. I'm sure we have made plenty of mistakes, but here are some responses to the ones that you highlighted.

1) The four of us are friends who run our own small businesses, and work on projects together. We decided to do this project together mainly for fun and to extend ourselves. We didn't aim to create a multi-cultural, multi-gender "team". This thing just happened.

2) Because we all run small businesses, we tried to miss as little work time as possible, which is why we ended on a Saturday. We initially thought of doing it on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, but that would have made for a very tiring weekend! It also adds a bit of reality - most new businesses start during evenings and weekends.

3) I'm surprised that Anj is able to criticise our sales experience from the little he/she knows of us. I suppose it's up to us to prove ourselves!

The exposure that we have received has totally taken us by surprise. We didn't expect it, and I don't think we would have gone to all this effort in the hope of some publicity.

Marketing Bug Zapper

While Fred, Jon and the crew are out interviewing people on the streets, Andrew and I are focussing our efforts on online marketing. We have just finished uploading some banner ads for Google to use on various South african sites. Here is an example of the smaller one:

We have also been tweeking the Google text ads that we set up late last night, here is one of them:

So far we have had <s>three</s> four actual sales - but all to people who have been following the Extreme Business Event - one of them being a team mate's mom! (For the record, it wasn't my mom! I can't really mention which team mate it was, because he is sitting right in front of me.)

The challenge we face - how many South Africans will be using the internet on Saturday? Both of these obstacles have been overcome by some hefty negotiations.

Our supplier blew us away with his willingness to give us the BugZappers on consignment and at a discounted price. This agreement has turned this 'good idea' into a 'viable business'.

We were also amazed by the courier company! They completely blew the rest of the companies out of the water. They are picking, packing and posting the BugZapper for us.

As the orders come through, they recieve the relevant details and post the order on that same day. Which means that once the website is setup, the business should run without our help. Well, that's the theory.

Caffeine! 100% Addicted

We had a really hot delivery from Espresso Concepts. I have found today most inspiring, and I know that this project will exceed all the expectations of the people involved. Even though there was some apprehention on the choice of product, in my professional opinion they have chosen the winning product. With the mix of minds we have working on the venture, the Extreme Business experience promises to be a unforgettable experiment. As a business-person I am proud to have been associated with these guys and I encourage everyone reading this to support the Bugzapper and future ventures of the Extreme Businessmen.

And as the official face for the Extreme Businessmen, I endorse this product with every free meal I get fed ( As my payment ). I'm feeling pretty worn at this stage of the game, and it's only day one! My heart continued to sink when I knew I had give the team the bad news.

I was really unhappy about the postage costs I was getting. None of the postal companies were interested in a special business rate. Their rates make it difficult to run any form of sustainable business online. This is an obstacle to our goal at this point. We need a cost effective solution to the logistical issues we face.

I arrived back into the studio to be greated by a sniggering team, who in their air conditioned room had come up with a solution. They managed to source a logistics company who have really gone out of their way to accomodate us. It's quite incredible what can be done when you're not dealing with the 'man'.

So thanks to this break through we're back in the game.

Further complications lie ahead as we begin to negotiate whether our supplier is going to budge on his original pricing. We're hoping he's going to agree on giving us a bulk price on consignment. I think these are words that he's not wanting to hear. At least not in the same sentence. We'll let you know how it goes.

But now, it's time to look at what the creatives, Shane and Fred, have come up with. They are pitching the brand ID to the rest of the team.

Stay with us, we might just make it.

Progress Report

Fred and I are busy with the product branding. It has been quite an interesting morning trying to balance making a business and making a TV program. For most of us it is the first time we have been involved in anything that has been filmed, and there is a lot to get used to! Everything takes so long - setting up lights and sounds, getting different angles, doing retakes. Our intention was to just do the business thing, and let the camera record it, but it's not as simple as that! We have only just chosen the product, after a few hours of working.

Extreme Podcast 1

This is our first Podcast. Andrew and I are in the office packing all the equipment, loading software etc. We are pretty much ready for action! Everything seems to be sorted, including all the camera gear and lighting.

The first half of tomorrow is going to be about product selection - each of us will be coming with one or more viable products. We have to do a whole pitch on why we think that particular product should be chosen. Once the product is selected - the real challenge will begin. Remember, we need one legitimate online sale within the 3 days.

Some of you are going to be popping by for a visit - the studio door might very well be closed, but please sneak in (follow our signage). Most of them replied, "Hey, this looks really interesting, but what's it all about"

Well I'm gonna tell you. It all started off as Shane's brainy idea, about two years ago.

Shane wanted to start selling random products on-line. Everyone dreams of the kind of business that makes money over the weekend while you're at the beach. That's what Shane wanted, to come in from the pool and exclaim, "Hey, look. We made four sales today".

Two years ago the seeds of an internet business were sown. Much talk around the braai resulted. Talk about how easily anybody can make money through the internet. Throwing out all the techno lingo often lead to many "ooh's" and "aah's" from the admiring corporate suits in attendance. As great as this was, we eventually realized that is was talk. There was no evidence that any kind of walk was to follow. But wait, the plot thickens...

Over the past few months, Shane and I (Jon) have started a business that focuses on website profitability. We've been selling our clients' products on-line with great success. What we have been doing for our clients we now want to do in an Extreme environment. A restricted budget and time frame to find a product, market it and sell that product all through the internet. All within three days and within the budget of R1000.

You've heard the saying don't trust a skinny chef. Well, I tell you, don't trust a website profitability guy until he's been to the Extreme. And so Extreme Business was born...

In the three days we want to show you two main things!
Firstly, that money can be generate through on-line businesses.
That it is easily done and that anybody can do it, even in three days.
Secondly, that all the big talk around the braai does not warrant any "ooh's" and "aah's" until the walk has replaced the talk.

To all you guys out there that dominate the braai arena. We're calling you into the great arena of life.

Let's do it boys!

Extreme Update

Yesterday we met with James, our Aussie camera man - great to have someone on board who knows what they are doing!!

There is a ton of stuff that still needs to be arranged - mainly on the logistical side. Andrew "the brain" wasn't able to make it as he is away on leave this week. That's cool because he's gonna need the energy next week. We seem to be making some head way - a couple of potential film makers/directors - by the end of the day we are hoping to have a confirmed name.

Yesterday Fred and Jon went to go and check out our venue, Kayos Casting. To see what rooms we can use etc. The studio that is available for us for the full 3 days is quite small, but we think suits the whole extreme business vibe - the great thing is that after a couple of hours, it is small enough and grey enough to start looking and feeling like a mental asylum. I think this is perfect!

We are about to send out a press release - so we will see what happens next. I'll keep you updated.

Camera Gear

The Video Lounge has agreed to sponsor edit time and a BetacamSP/DVCAM D30 camera - serious broadcast gear.
